Outrage Magazine launched Bahaghari Media Awards to give recognition to media personalities whose works not only highlight the real plight of LGBTQI Filipinos, but – by doing so – help in the struggle for equal rights.

As a move to give recognition to people who assist in the struggle for equal rights by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Filipinos, Outrage Magazine has launched the Bahaghari Awards. Part of this is the Bahaghari Media Awards, given out for the first time to highlight the important role that select media personalities play in informing/educating the public about LGBT-related issues, thereby aiding in bettering the plight of LGBT people.

“Saying that giving credit where it’s due may now be considered cliché, but the thought remains the same: best practices need to be emphasized as they could help influence other endeavors attempting to do good,” said Michael David C. Tan, who established the only publication for the LGBTQI community in the Philippines in 2007. As such, “Bahaghari Media Awards is Outrage Magazine’s attempt to do this (that is, giving of credit where it’s due).”

More particularly, the Bahaghari Media Awards gives recognition to media personalities whose works: highlight the plight of LGBT Filipinos; help inform/educate Filipino public about LGBTQI people; aid in pushing for LGBTQI issues to be recognized; and assist in whatever way in the struggle for equal rights by LGBTQI people.

Bahaghari Media Awards winners were selected using the following criteria: fairness, accuracy and inclusive representations, which attempt to feature efforts of media practitioners to include the diversity of the LGBTQI community in their reporting; daring and originality, which looks at the groundbreaking approach and, hopefully, the groundbreaking effects of the media practitioner’s efforts in pushing for LGBTQI rights in the Philippines; and impact, which focuses on the effects – perceived or actual – that the media practitioner’s media-related efforts have in the promotion of LGBTQI rights in the Philippines.

“While the media gets criticized for often failing to promote the common good, we believe instead in highlighting how it can help in advocating for what’s right,” Tan said. As such, “the Bahaghari Media Awards is a (huge first) step for us to honor those whose works we believe do not only showcase LGBT diversity, but – by doing so – promote the acceptance of this diversity.”

The board of judges of the first Bahaghari Media Awards included: Angie Umbac, president of Rainbow Rights Inc.; Henry Perey, Pinoy Deaf Rainbow Inc.; Philip Castro, Communications Team Leader/Programme Officer for HIV and AIDS of the United Nations Development Programme Philippines; Roxanne Omega Doron, executive director of Bisdak Pride Inc.; Bemz Benedito, former first Congressional nominee of Ladlad; Red Tani, president of Filipino Freethinkers; Patrick King Pascual, representing Bahaghari Center; and John Ryan N. Mendoza and Michael David C. Tan of Outrage Magazine.

April 2007 marked the launching of Outrage Magazine, the only Webzine made for, and by members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community in the Philippines.

The LGBTzine remains loyal to the reasons of its existence (i.e. to be a relevant source of info on everything LGBT-related in the Philippines), and we are proud to say that year-on-year since we were established, Outrage Magazine’s scope has broadened. No surprise that our reach continues to grow, too, with our Website alone now getting well over 1.3 MILLION hits per month on average (with approximately 15,000 of them unique hits), while our Facebook page (not counting our other online presence) getting over hundreds of thousands of unique visits per week.

Yes, there is a need for information; and yes, we’re more than willing to provide.

THERE ARE TWO WAYS YOU CAN HELP US HELP THE LGBT COMMUNITY.

And just in time, too, as pink lifestyle long invading mainstream living – think Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, or IKEA, or gay speak, or disco, or brunch, or My Husband's Lover, or... you get the point.

This makes the LGBT market, and those it affects, a goldmine for advertisers.

Consider these:
• 81% of LGBTs are more likely to use the Internet to obtain information about goods and services (Witeck-Combs)
• 72% to 94% of LGBTs prefer to buy brands that market directly to them (Harris/Witeck-Combs &Greenfield Online)
• 89% of LGBTs are brand-affiliated, this means that it is “most likely or highly likely to actively seek out brands that had advertised in gay media” (Simmons)
• LGBTs spend an average of 30 minutes per day, 12 times per month online (Nielsen NetRatings)
• LGBTs are twice as likely to be in management positions, twice as likely to have purchased online using a credit card, 79% are willing to pay a premium of quality products and services, 94% of gays and lesbians go out of their way to purchase products and services marketed directly to them in gay media, and 79% of LGBTs are highly likely to indulge themselves (@Plan, Simmons, Greenfield Online & Witeck-Combs)

It is time to target this market, we say.

So use us.
