In Mexico, the State of Mexico, voted to legalize marriage equality, passed by 50 votes in favor to 16 against. With this, the country’s most populous state becomes the 29th of the 32 states to do so.
In a Twitter post, the state’s legislative body stated that “equal marriage is a public institution, whereby two people freely decide to share a life.”
The State of Mexico is home to around 17 million people.
Mexico City was the first part of the country to legalize marriage equality over a decade ago in 2009. The recent vote follows the states of Sonora and Sinaloa.
There are still other states – i.e. Tamaulipas, Tabasco and Guerrero – that do not have a similar law in place.
