The most important quality for anyone who wants to be a nurse should have is a caring nature. It is important for you to show a natural affiliation to being caring and kind to everyone you meet and this quality will make all the difference to you and how you cope in this career as a whole.
Empathy
As a nurse empathy can be a valuable trait to have because you will often be face with people who are in a vulnerable position in life and people who have specific issues which they need to work out. It is important for you as a nurse and a person to know that people think in a different way and circumstances can have an effect on them and their ability to look after themselves and think rationally. As long as you show compassion for your patients this will always be ok.
Patience
There will always be times, in any profession where someone will try and knock you down and make you feel less than worth it. The important thing for you to remember is that these people are likely stressed and struggling with their own things and a lot of the time they won’t think about what they are saying before they snap and bite at you, because of this it is important for you to be patient with everyone who sees you and simply wait for them to be ready to give you an answer or be kind to you.
Friendliness
As a nurse you’ll spend every day of your career talking to people from all over and because of this you will want to make sure that you are friendly and kind by nature. There will be so many people you see on a day to day basis and speaking to people constantly can be a challenge, but as long as you put on a smiling face and be kind, this is a great thing and it will make you and your patients feel happier and at ease.
Assertiveness
When you get to a certain point in your career as a nurse you may have interns who work with you and you’ll need to be able to tell them what to do and how to do it. Make sure that you are assertive and show authority to these others because this will help you massively when it comes down to the wire.
