The UK is considered as one of the worst places to be transgender, with “widespread” hatred noted by Transgender Europe’s (TGEU) 2023 Trans Rights Map that illustrates the legal situation of transgender people in 49 countries in Europe and five in Central Asia.
The map ranked countries using 30 indicators in six legal categories, namely: legal gender recognition, asylum, hate crime/speech, non-discrimination, health and family. The more indicators a country has, the better it is for trans people and trans rights.
On top of the list is Iceland, satisfying 26 of the 30 indicators. Among the lowest-scoring countries for transgender rights are Russia (5/30 indicators), Turkey (2/30), and Italy and Hungary (8/30).
The UK scored 14.25 out of 30, close in ranking to Ireland (13/30), Netherlands (15/30), and Portugal (8/30).
