Artistang Artlets, the official theater guild of the Faculty of Arts and Letters at the University of Santo Tomas, is marking its 45th season with the staging of Tiffany Chanel Ducusin’s scathing Filipino dramedy “Binibining Maria Clara” on November 8 (from 1.00PM) at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex Auditorium in UST.

Forming part of the Artistang Artlets’ seniors’ Theatre Literacy Program, the original work will come to life under the direction of Claudette Francesca Bayabay, and is produced by Natalie Aaren Tolentino.

“Binibining Maria Clara” revolves around the “agonizing quest for genuine self-worth”, Artistang Artlets’ press statement reads. It tackles this quest through the narratives of a beautician, an aged queen-mother, the ever-so-romantic love interest, and two furious rival candidates. Trapped backstage due to an unforeseen calamity, they are forced to take off their glitzy masks and face the high cost of perfection. This, thereby, explores female rivalry, identity, and the pressure of social conventions in a colorful, chaotic, and ultimately redemptive way.
