5 Creative Outlets That Support LGBTQ+ Wellness

Even a simple creative hobby can be a tool for enjoyment, healing, and visibility. If you’re looking for a creative outlet to support your wellness (or simply pass the time), here are some ideas.

If there’s one trait that is shared among the LGBTQ+, it’s creativity. It’s always been at the heart of the community, from fashion shows and activism to storytelling and art. LGBTQ+ individuals have used their creative prowess for self-expression and to celebrate their identity, build community, and reclaim space.

Even a simple creative hobby can be a tool for enjoyment, healing, and visibility. If you’re looking for a creative outlet to support your wellness (or simply pass the time), here are some ideas.

Journaling

Journaling is a great way to capture everyday thoughts, process feelings, and affirm emotions. Just you, your journal, and your thoughts — it’s a safe space that allows you to truly dig deep and explore your identity.

Journaling can also be your outlet for releasing emotional weight without fear of judgment. Whether you want to write about coming out, dealing with societal pressure, or even celebrating milestones in self-discovery, you’ll find that writing things down helps you better make sense of and appreciate your journey.

And remember: a journal doesn’t need to follow a template, nor do you need to be a writer to start. You just need to make it yours. Get creative, tell your story, and watch how it heals you — mentally, emotionally, and holistically.

Arts and Crafts

Arts and crafts have always been a part of LGBTQ+ activism. You’ll often see members of the community holding up posters they made at home or dressed in costumes they sewed themselves.

Crafting doesn’t have to be limited to the days leading up to an LGBTQ+ parade, though. You can engage in arts and crafts in your day-to-day, whether that’s painting, knitting, crocheting, or beading.

It’s a deeply cathartic experience creating something with your own hands. And if you get creative enough, it allows space for expression beyond words.

Movement

If you’re looking for something more active, this one’s for you. Moving your body is not only a good way to get some exercise in and improve mental and physical health, but it can also be an act of empowerment.

Dance, yoga, flow arts, and other movement-based hobbies can become your way of reclaiming your body and experiencing fun and joy on your own terms.

Gaming

You don’t have to sign up for a yoga class every week or force yourself to finish that cross-stitch you started months ago if you don’t want to. We all have different preferences and definitions of fun, and sometimes, the best hobbies are the simplest.

For simple and casual ways to get creative and unwind, try gaming. Solving puzzles, engaging in a story game, or even snagging casino bonus offers can be the mental break you didn’t know you needed. It’s light entertainment that resets your mind and just allows you to relax and enjoy yourself without any pressure.

Community

The LGBTQ+ experience is all about community. Your downtime is the best time to engage with others in the same journey as you. Find spaces on Discord to join, engage with queer groups and forums on social media, or even sign up for that meet and greet in your local park.

Joining a community provides a sense of belonging like no other. It reminds you that you’re not alone in this journey. Who knows, you might even find people who share your passions and hobbies, leading to lifelong friendships and forging creative collaborations.
