XRoads Bar opens as Manila’s newest LGBT space

As a fresh addition to the LGBT Manila party scene, this neighborhood style bar offers first of its kind entertainment options in the country, such as a piano bar, cowboy line dancing as well as a traditional dance floor, and a pool table. Toned down from the usual deafening rounds of club anthems, its amenities offer a more intimate bar experience, thereby a great alternative space.

XRoads BarXRoads Bar (pronounced as “crossroads”) has opened as the newest space to drink, dance, and mingle in the metro. As a fresh addition to the LGBT Manila party scene, this neighborhood style bar  focuses on the 30 years and older crowd, including foreigners and discreet men/women.

XRoads Bar features first of its kind entertainment options in the country  such as a piano bar, cowboy line dancing as well as a traditional dance floor, and a pool table. Toned down from the usual deafening rounds of club anthems, its amenities offer a more intimate bar experience, a great alternative space for conversations with old and new friends, while offering a selection of draft beers, and other alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

“XRoads is the first bar in the Philippines that truly aims to cater to the whole spectrum of the LGBT community. Geared towards an older clientele, the bar will offer a wide variety of entertainment that will appeal to its target demographics. It seeks to provide a conducive setting for bonding and entertainment,” earlier said Philip Castro, who owns the venue.

The bar is open from Tuesday to Sunday.

According to its general manager, Chris Hancock, “in the mornings of Tuesday to- Saturday, XRoads Bar aims to serve the call center crowd who work USA support shifts, “so they can end their day with a beer.”

Parties are eyed to happen every night. Free line dance lessons and practice on the second floor will be offered on Wednesdays, while the bar is open downstairs. The second floor will be allocated for girls’ night-out on Thursdays, while the bar downstairs is open. Every Friday, there is a club scene upstairs. Saturdays are eyed for line dancing on the second floor.  Meanwhile, on Sundays, XRoads Bar offers “drain the keg” and other mid-afternoon events beginning at about 11:00AM and closing around 7:00PM on the ground floor; while the second floor is for-girls only.

XRoads Bar is also eyeing to help out LGBT organizations by providing venue for their functions in its effort to give back to the community. “We will partner with NGOs to promote their advocacy and mission,” Castro ended.

XRoads Bar is located at Food Street (right across O Bar in Ortigas), Home Depot Complex, Julia Vargas corner Meralco Avenue, Pasig City.

A registered nurse, John Ryan (or call him "Rye") Mendoza hails from Cagayan de Oro City in Mindanao (where, no, it isn't always as "bloody", as the mainstream media claims it to be, he noted). He first moved to Metro Manila in 2010 (supposedly just to finish a health social science degree), but fell in love not necessarily with the (err, smoggy) place, but it's hustle and bustle. He now divides his time in Mindanao (where he still serves under-represented Indigenous Peoples), and elsewhere (Metro Manila included) to help push for equal rights for LGBT Filipinos. And, yes, he parties, too (see, activists need not be boring! - Ed).
