Senatorial candidate Migs Zubiri supports penalizing LGBT discrimination, but is against marriage equality

Juan Miguel “Migs” Zubiri: “My personal opinion, I’m not in favor (of same-sex marriage). I’m in favor of… legalizing unions that would help them in the disposition of properties, in the ownership of properties.”

Former senator – and now senatorial candidate – Juan Miguel “Migs” Zubiri has expressed his support for the LGBT community, saying he is even willing to file a bill that penalizes discrimination against LGBT people, even if he also said that he is not in favor of same-sex marriage in churches.

Interviewed by ANC of ABS-CBN, Zubiri said: “My personal opinion, I’m not in favor (of same-sex marriage). I’m in favor of looking at, probably, unions. Legalizing unions that would help them in the disposition of properties, in the ownership of properties.”

Zubiri added: “I’m willing to file a bill that will give them anti-discrimination rights because they need that.”

Pressed on his position, Zubiri stressed that as he is a practicing Roman Catholic, he does not agree with “same-sex marriage in church” but he is open for legal unions that will allow LGBT couples to manage properties together. This move, he said, is “more on the law.”

Zubiri resigned from the Senate in 2011 after his 2007 senate victory was questioned. He was replaced by Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III.
