Tinder will start offering its users the option to select their own pronoun (from over 15 pronouns), as well as choose the type of relationship they desire, including monogamy, ethical non-monogamy (ENM), open relationship, polyamory and open to exploring. This is said to particularly target users aged 18 to 25, as well as LGBTQIA daters, to date the fastest-growing group using the app.
The new features actually came after research was done into the needs of Tinder users. In this research done in the US, UK, Australia and Canada, where 4,000 18 to 25 year olds who were actively dating were surveyed, it was found that while 51% of Gen Z daters want monogamous relationships, 41% of young singles are actually open to or seeking non-monogamous relationships. 36% of the participants were also willing to engage in open relationships, and 26% of people were interested in polyamory.
It was similarly noted that the number of LGBTQIA Tinder users has more than doubled in the past two years. Also, 33% of current users agreed that their sexuality is more fluid, while 29% said their gender identity had become more fluid in the past three years.
The rollout of the features may not be the same for everyone, though. In the UK – for example – it could happen later this year, with Tinder to allow users to choose up to four pronouns to display on their profile from a list of more than 15 options. Sexual orientation and gender will also be available to choose and display.
Tinder was launched in 2012.
