Trans women are not wanted here…

Former beauty queen Alma Concepcion believes transgender women should not be allowed to join Miss Universe because they are unable to reach the full essence of a woman because they cannot bear children.

Concepcion won the Binibining Pilipinas International title in 1994, eventually representing the country at the Miss International 1994 pageant. She failed to win the title.

As reported by Bandera, Concepcion said she agrees with allowing married women, as well as older women in the pageant. “Kasi sometimes, parang motherhood makes you better. First, mas lumalalim yung knowledge mo, kumbaga mas nagiging rich yung experience mo.”

But she draws the line when it comes to trans women. “Kasi paano mo mari-reach yung full essence of a woman if you cannot give birth, di ba? So parang kailangan ma-embody mo yung full essence of a woman, hindi lang sa utak, pati yung paano ka maging asawa, paano ka maging mother.”

Even if unintentional, Concepcion actually showed an anti-women stance by basing her anti-trans argument on reproduction.

It is estimated that from 10% to 11% of women of reproductive age face fertility challenges, and about 12% to 14% of women experience impaired fecundity (meaning, they have a physical difficulty conceiving or carrying a pregnancy to full term). If Concepcion’s position is used as basis in defining womanhood, then these persons will also fail to qualify as “women”.

Concepcion is also mum on intersex people.

Concepcion stressed that she supports the LGBTQIA+ community. But there should be boundaries and limitations.

“Actually, yung pag-entertain nila ng transgender sa Miss Universe, okay ‘yun. For universal and everything, unity, inclusivity. Pero yung stand ko, eh, yung full essence of a woman, merong hindi mako-cover yung mga trans,” Concepcion said.
