Attack of transgender people continues in the land of the (not so) free…
In Kansas, some 1,700 people had their driver’s licenses invalidated simply for being who they are: transgender people.
The state became the first to pass a law that retroactively canceled licenses that were already changed by invalidating birth certificates for those who updated their gender markers.
Kansas actually allowed transgender people to update the gender markers on their IDs since 2007. But in 2023, it changed its legal definition of sex to be male or female and only what was assigned at birth.
With this, documents that recognized their transgender identities were made “invalid immediately”. They “may be subject to additional penalties” if they continue to drive using their driver’s license, which they must now surrender to the Kansas Division of Vehicles so a new one will be issued to them containing their birth sex.
To date, 15 other American states have a similar anti-transgender policy that is aligned with the anti-LGBTQIA+ stance of American president, Donald J. Trump, the first convicted felon to hold the country’s highest post.
