Hollywood legend Warren Beatty on transgender son: ‘He’s my hero’

Hollywood actor and director Warren Beatty has publicly opened about his transgender son for the first time. “He’s a revolutionary, a genius, and my hero, as are all my children,” Beatty was quoted as saying of Stephen Ira. He now joins the likes of Sally Field, Anne Hathaway, Chris Evans, Adam Levine and Colin Farrell who back members of their families who are LGBT.

Hollywood actor and director Warren Beatty has publicly opened about his transgender son for the first time. Interviewed by Vanity Fair, Beatty commended his eldest son Stephen Ira, a trans activist and writer, whom he called as a “revolutionary”, and serves as his “hero”.

“He’s a revolutionary, a genius, and my hero, as are all my children,” Beatty was quoted as saying.

The 24-year-old Ira is the oldest of Warren’s four children with actress Annette Benning. Ira came out as transgender in 2009 and gay in 2011.

“One is struck by Stephen’s insouciant intelligence—he manages to be playful, erudite, and eloquent all at once,” Beatty added.

Ira is currently co-editor of “Vetch: A Magazine of Trans Poetry & Poetics“.

With Beatty’s open support for Ira, he joins the likes of Sally FieldAnne Hathaway, Cyndi Lauper, Cher, Chris Evans, Adam Levine and Colin Farrell who back members of their families who are LGBT.
