Intersex PH elects new board members; executive director stresses ‘more work to be done’

Intersex Philippines, Inc. elected its new Board of Trustees, helmed by Dana Mae Padre, the newly-elected president, after Jeff Cagandahan stepped down to focus as IXPI’s executive director.

Intersex Philippines, Inc. (IXPI) elected its new Board of Trustees (BOT), helmed by Dana Mae Padre, the newly-elected president, who is taking over from Jeff Cagandahan who stepped down to focus as IXPI’s executive director. Charm Ison is the secretary, while Liezel Callueng is the treasurer. Cagandahan and MJ Bobis complete the BOT.

The change in the organization’s BOT is timely, said Cagandahan, because “even as we grow as an organization, what’s highlighted to us are the numerous issues that intersex Filipinos face. More intersex Filipinos rightly step up, broadening the scope of what we can do to make sure we do not get left behind.”

According to Padre, continuing to advocate for intersex issues is essential. “We are gaining traction, she said, “but awareness is just the beginning. The intersex community deserves lasting visibility in a world where many voices compete for attention. Advocacy pushes for meaningful change, fights stigma, and ensures intersex people are recognized and respected. It’s about making sure our voices are not just heard today, but continue to shape a more inclusive future for generations to come.”

IXPI eyes to make longer-term impacts in the lives of intersex Filipinos, including working on the passage of the Cagandahan Bill that could simplify the process for intersex individuals to change their sex markers, ensuring legal recognition; better access to life-saving medications for those with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH); and to continue public awareness campaigns to promote understanding and acceptance.”

“There’s still a lot of work to be done,” Cagandahan said, “and – as is always the case – we’re raring to go.”

Established in 2017, IXPI is the pioneering organization for intersex people in the country.

Call him A.M. (short for Albert Magallanes, obviously; though - he says - also to "signify being on the go, as people tend to be in the mornings"). A graduate of BS Physical Therapy (in DLS Health Sciences Institute), he found his calling ("Sort of," he laughed) attempting to organize communities ("While having fun in the process," he beamed). For instance, in Las Piñas where he is based, he helps helm an MSM group that has evolved from just offering social events to aiding its members as needed. He now writes for Outrage Magazine as the Las Piñas (and southern) correspondent.
