In Slovakia, the parliament decided to keep registration of relationships exclusively for one man and one woman only after it voted against cohabitation partnership that would have granted same-sex couples inheritance rights and the right to access medical records.

In the proposal, same-sex couples could register their partnership. This would then grant them – among others – inheritance rights, entitlement to decide about medical treatments, and compensation in the event of death or injury at work.

It is worth noting that even if the bill had been passed, same-sex couples are still not entitled to the same rights as heterosexual couples.

The bill failed after only 50 of the needed 76 MPs voted in favor.
