TLF SHARE has announced the re-scheduling of the 2014 Ms. U Bowling Pageant and Bowlibining Pilipinas – a mash-up of a bowling tournament and a beauty contest, making it a not-so-ordinary sports tournament – on December 14, as the country’s capital braces for the arrival of typhoon Ruby (international name: Hagupit), which is expected to hit Metro Manila on Monday, December 8.

Packing maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour and gusts of 210 kph, typhoon Ruby made landfall in Dolores, a coastal town in Eastern Samar on Saturday night, consequently knocking out power in the provinces of Sorsogon, Catanduanes, Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Masbate and Mindoro; and sending more than 650,000 people fleeing into shelters.  By Sunday, Ruby was packing maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour and gusts of 170 kph; and sent nearly 900,000 into shelters.

Earlier forecast models predict Ruby to cut across central Visayas, but projection from the US Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) as early as November 4 showed that it may instead move through Quezon and Aurora. If this forecast doesn’t change, Ruby is expected to be less than 100 kilometers away from Manila by Tuesday afternoon.

Dubbed as a “bowling pageant”, Ms. U and Bowlibining Pilipinas will now be held at the Coronado Lanes, 4/F Starmall, EDSA (beside MRT Station), Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong City on December 14, Sunday, from 4:00 PM.

Ms. U started in 2000, initially as part of the TLF SHARE’s sports event and celebration of Pride month (June), then eyeing to build camaraderie for TLF SHARE’s participants and their friends. It played with the Filipinos’ penchant or beauty pageants by merging pageantry into a bowling tournament joined in by teams of four bowlers.

Bowlibining Pilipinas was born in the same year (December 2000), and this differed from the former as it was an individual competition. The top five winners were given the titles mimicking Binibining Pilipinas – i.e. Bowlibining Pilipinas Universe, World, International, Tourism, and the first runner-up.

Since the twice-a-year tournaments lasted only from 2000 to 2007, TLF SHARE decided to bring them back into one “bowling pageant” this year.

While winning – and getting that crown – may be everyone’s goal,Dennis Corteza, who is helping organize this year’s event, said that “that’s but part of it. “Winning is not everything. It’s having fun while not winning . So come join us,” Corteza ended.
