When it comes to creating a product for your business to sell, you need to have a strong sense of what will make it successful. That doesn’t mean that you can promise it will be so, or that you are able to make it certain. But it does mean you can have a sense of what generally works, and from that you should be able to really improve the chances of it working out.
In this post, we’ll consider what you might do to increase your chances of building a successful product.
Start With The Problem
It can be tempting to start with the idea behind a product. You might have had a concept that you really like or you find attractive, and you just want to put it into action. But it’s much more effective if you start with a problem that you want to solve, and work outwards from there. Think about researching what it is that your customers really want fixed, and then consider if you can fix it. This is much more likely to lead to a product that people will really appreciate, and it’s something that is going to make a huge difference to your experience of making it.
Validate & Test
You should always put your product to rigorous testing and validation, because this is the kind of thing that is going to be really useful for the effectiveness of the product. There are many kinds of testing that you might want to consider here, from penetration testing to market testing, but the point is that you are trying the product from all angles and seeing how that fares. This is going to be a much more effective way of ensuring that it is a success, and it’s going to help you reduce errors across the board.
Define Success Clearly
It might sound obvious, but if you want something to be a success, you need to figure out what you actually mean by that. What is success? What does it look like? The more finely you can define success, the more likely it is that you are going to know when you get there. And this actually means that you are going to put a lot more effort and work into the process of building your product in the first place. So this is the kind of thing that you are going to need to think about early on too.
Build Small
It’s usually best to start off by building small and building up from there. This means that you can start to get the product out, and then perfect it later on – once you have already garnered some interest and, crucially, made some sales to help with cash flow. This is how most startups do it these days, and there is certainly a lot to be said for it. So it might be a philosophy that you want to consider too as you try to get things up and running.
