A destination wedding is something a lot of couples dream of because it combines the excitement of travel with one of the most memorable celebrations of your life. Whether you’re imagining saying your vows in an historic castle or with a beachfront view, choosing the right venues is undoubtedly one of the biggest decisions you will ever make.

The perfect location should be one that not only looks stunning in all of your photos, but which also provides you and your guests with a comfortable and enjoyable experience overall.

Start with your wedding vision

Before you start researching destinations, it is a good idea to take some time to think about the kind of atmosphere you want to create. Many couples dream of a relaxed tropical wedding, while others really do prefer an elegant city venue or countryside retreat.

It’s a good idea to consider your guest list, preferred wedding style, and overall budget before you get started because once you know what your priorities are, it’s so much easier to narrow down your options without becoming overwhelmed by the large number of venues that are available all over the world. And of course, a clear vision makes it easier for you to communicate your expectations with everyone from venues to suppliers.

Think about guest experience

Your guests will likely be traveling a considerable distance, so convenience should be an important factor. Look at nearby airports, transportation options, accommodation choices, and local attractions. Choosing a venue that is easy to reach and offers a variety of places to stay can make the entire experience more enjoyable for everyone attending.

Many couples also choose destinations where guests can turn the wedding into a short holiday, adding even more value to the trip.

Consider the local climate

The weather can make or break a wedding overseas, especially if you plan to have the ceremony outdoors, so you would be smart to research average temperatures, rainfall, and seasonal weather patterns before you finalize your choice of destination. You will be aiming to avoid things like hurricane seasons, extreme heat, or periods of heavy rainfall so that the chances of disruption are as low as they can possibly be.

It’s also wise to ask whether the venue offers indoor alternatives should the weather change.

Visit before you book

If possible, you shoudl try to arrange a visit to your preferred venue before you make the final decision. While online photographs and virtual tours can be a good indicator, seeing the location in person allows you to really assess the layout, surroundings and overall atmosphere of the place. But, if you can’t travel then at least try to arrange a detailed virtual tour and lots of very recent photographs.

Hire a wedding planner

Of course, one the best ways to successfully plan a wedding overseas is to hire a luxury wedding planner at your location who can handle all of the venues and vendors for you in the local language and ensure you get everything you want from your big day.

A wedding overseas? It really doesn’t have to be as complex as you think.
