Controlling the right to freedom of information in the US of A?
Packaged as an anti-porn access effort to protect minors, a bill has been passed in the House of Representatives of Kansas in the USA to censor works of art, classic books and LGBTQIA content. Senate Bill 394 will also require age verification for websites that contain 25% or more content that is “harmful to minors,” as defined by state statute.
In this bill, all materials of “sexual conduct” are deemed “harmful to minors”. Sexual conduct is defined to include “acts of masturbation, homosexuality, sexual intercourse or physical contact with a person’s clothed or unclothed genitals or pubic area or with a human female’s breast”.
Politics in Kansas – a landlocked state in the Midwestern region of the USA – is dominated by rightwing Republican party members. Perhaps not surprisingly, the bill passed 92-31, mainly along party lines.
Earlier, Senate lawmakers also voted 40-0 to approve a version of the bill. And so it now goes to the governor’s desk for final consideration/signing.
