A glimpse of extremism in Nebraska.

In Nebraska in the US, lawmakers passed a bill that: 1) puts restrictions on gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth, and 2) bans abortions after 12 weeks of gestational age. This bill, expected to be signed by extremist Republican governor Jim Pillen, is the latest of anti-LGBTQIA bills passed all over the US by right-wing politicians, who have also been attacking women’s right over their body when right-wing-helmed US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last year.

Nebraska’s single-house legislature, dominated by right-wing Republicans, voted 33-15 to pass the bill, known as L.B. 574. This bill specifically bans “gender-altering surgery” and places restrictions on hormone therapy and puberty-blocking drugs for transgender people under 19.

To date, extremist Republicans already introduced over 500 bills affecting LGBTQIA people in 2023 alone, with at least 49 passing.
