For the 43rd recognition rites of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) of the University of the Philippines-Manila, graduates will be allowed to use their lived names… at least during the ceremonies, if not in the school-released documents.
Lived names are used by people, many from the LGBTQIA+ community, due to misalignment with the names assigned to them at birth. And “ang pagkilala rito sa CAS Recognition ay isang mahalagang hakbang sa paggalang sa identidad at dignidad ng bawat mag-aaral at sa pagtataguyod ng isang mas inklusibong komunidad,” stated the UP Manila Student Council.
Earlier, at the 60th Convention of the General Assembly of Student Councils (GASC), the student council submitted a resolution on the use of lived names “bilang bahagi ng pagsusulong nito ng pagkilala sa identidad at dignidad ng bawat mag-aaral.“
Here are detais and guides on the use of lived names:
- Lived names will be highlighted in the slide deck, while the names assigned at birth will be placed under.
- The lived names will be read during the ceremony.
- Graduates may use their lived names without need for parental consent.
- The graduates who want to use their lived names are to provide their Block Representatives a pronunciation guide to remove or lessen errors during the ceremony.

Kaya naman, hinihimok din ng KM-KAS ang administrasyon ng UP Manila ang paggamit din nito sa paparating na Graduation Ceremony. Ipagpapatuloy natin ang pagsulong ng mga patakarang kumikilala sa identidad ng lahat, sapagkat walang tunay na inklusibong edukasyon kung hindi kinikilala ang pangalan at pagkatao ng mamamayan nito,” the student council ended.
