In Greece, the Prime Minister – Kyriakos Mitsotakis – reiterated his commitment to legalize marriage equality. Interviewed by Bloomberg Television in Athens, Mitsotaki stated that including marriage equality in this political party’s strategy is inevitable, particularly since – for him – Greek society has evolved and is now more prepared and progressive on this issue.

“Same-sex marriage will happen at some point and it’s part of our strategy,” Mitsotakis, a center-right politician, was quoted as saying. “Greek society is much more ready and mature.”

In 2021, the PM formed a committee to draft a national strategy to help the country’s LGBTQIA community. He has – since then – implemented reforms, such as reversing the ban on homosexual men donating blood, and ending sex-normalizing surgeries on children.

In Greece, same-sex civil partnerships was recognized in 2015, and gender identity in 2017.

The PM did not set a timeline on when he eyes for marriage equality to become law of the land.
