Filipino LGBT psychologists and scholars gathered in a second national writers workshop organized by the Psychological Association of the Philippines (PAP) to ready their locally conducted LGBT research studies for publication.

Eighteen researchers from Quezon City, Manila, Iloilo, Nueva Ecija, and Tacloban brought manuscripts of their completed research for three days of feedback and discussion, led by Allan BI Bernardo, professor of psychology from the University of Macau and former editor of the Philippine Journal of Psychology.

Topics of the studies included: family support for lesbian and gay elderly, gay men in rural farming communities, transwomen riding the MRT, prison experiences of gay men in Leyte, the teaching of LGBT psychology in the Philippines, everyday sexism felt by lesbian and bisexual Filipinas, the prevalence of homophobic Tagalog words on Twitter, and the impact of papal opinion on homophobia among Filipino Catholics.

The residential workshop held in Quezon City was organized by the PAP’s LGBT Psychology Special Interest Group in support of a special all-LGBT issue of the peer-reviewed research publication Philippine Journal of Psychology slated for June 2016. Co-organizing the event was the University of the Philippines Center for Women’s Studies Foundation, with support from the American Psychological Association’s LGBT Concerns Office and the Arcus Foundation.
