Intersex Philippines, Inc. (IXPI), the pioneering organization for intersex people in the Philippines, held an Intersex 101 session in Makati City as part of its ongoing Intersex Awareness Caravan that eyes to teach people about intersex people and their issues.
The event was done in partnership with the Makati Social Welfare and Development Department and the Makati Active Youth Association (MAYA).
In a statement, IXPI stated that the session eyed to give “participants a better understanding of intersex variations, sex characteristics, and the lived experiences of intersex people. It was also an opportunity to address common misconceptions and discuss the discrimination intersex people continue to face, including in their access to services and recognition of their rights.”
The session, therefore, “went beyond learning the basics as it also opened space to talk about what local institutions can do to make their programs and services more inclusive and responsive to the needs of intersex people.”
Through its Intersex Awareness Caravan, IXPI “continues to work with local governments and community partners to bring (intersex-related) conversations to more communities,” stated Jeff Cagandahan, executive director of IXPI. “There is still much to learn, but every conversation helps challenge misconceptions and build a better understanding of intersex lives and experiences.”
