Chris, 27, has been repeatedly attacked for what gets his rocks off, he said. For instance, “I’ve been called names – gross, freak, demon, baboy (pig)… magkasakit daw sana ako (they wish I’d get sick).”
But he chooses to just shrug them off; “I reply, ‘To each his own.’ Which they probably don’t understand.”
What these people who are attacking Chris do not get is coprophilia, also called scatophilia or scat fetish, the paraphilia involving sexual arousal and pleasure from feces.
Yes, you read that right.
“I still get horny (without scat),” Chris said. “pero walang (but there’s no) excitement. Those times when I have sex without scat are… just like masturbating for me.” In a word, they can be “tedious.”
For Chris, it started around five years ago, when “I accidentally watched a gay scat form,” he recalled. “I was actually intrigued and not grossed out since the guys (in the film) were really good looking.”
That was an amateur film, and “me being a fan of amateur films, it got a very good reaction from me.”
That led to Chris creating a profile in a “scat site”. And – this may come as a surprise to many – “there were a few Pinoys (there who) I got to talk to.” And so his first session happened.
Chris said that for him, “it’s more on smearing.”
Looking back, Chris could still recall how it was like that first time.
“It was exhilarating,” he said, adding that “it gave me a good high even without using any illegal substance.”
Coprophilia remains largely… not discussed.
Even the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), published by the American Psychiatric Association, classifies it under 302.89 – Paraphilia NOS (Not Otherwise Specified). Meaning, it has no diagnostic criteria other than a general statement about paraphilias that says that “the diagnosis is made if the behavior, sexual urges, or fantasies cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning”.
Let it be known that the DSM-IV-TR also notes that “Fantasies, behaviors, or objects are paraphilic only when they lead to clinically significant distress or impairment (e.g. are obligatory, result in sexual dysfunction, require participation of nonconsenting individuals, lead to legal complications, interfere with social relationships)”.
Chris said he is fully aware with what he is getting himself into with his fetish.
For instance, “currently I have not tried putting shit in my mouth since I consider the dangers of getting unwanted infections from feces,” he said.
Does it matter what kind of scat?
“No,” Chris said.
But he admitted that finding partners in the Philippines continues to be challenging, particularly when – on top of the fetish – he also eyes “at least manly and good looking” guys.
Truth be told, Chris said that “perhaps this could (just be) a phase for me; I really can’t tell this early.”
Chris recognizes that many do not understand coprophilia, and would even quickly knock him – and people like him – down. But “I say to each his own,” he said. “What you don’t understand doesn’t merit you to think that you’re above it. Be more accepting and learn to co-exist.” – With Michael David C. Tan
