If you want to feel safe when you are out and on your own, then it’s so important that you take steps now to try and protect yourself.

If you follow this guide, you will find that you can not only feel good about yourself, but also make sure that you’re confident that you’re protected.

Know your Route

The first thing you need to do is take the time to understand your route. You need to make sure that you have a map of your route, and you also need to make sure that you are not always dependent on the internet. If you can make sure that the map you need is accessible offline as well, then this will help you more than you realise. If you can also make sure that you carry an app like What3Words, then this will also help you with more precise location tracking. Emergency services often use things like What3Words, and these are very good if you are working in an area that has very low coverage or if you know that you are going to walk in a more rural area.

You can also share your location with a trusted friend, who can then track your location from their phone, which is great if you want to make sure that you are always able to connect with someone when they need you.

Be Visible

Another good thing to do is to make sure that you are always visible. Carry a whistle with you, and also make sure that you carry a small torch. If you have a personal safety alarm, then this is also great. Depending on where you are going, it may also benefit you to carry an expandable baton. This will give you protection against almost anything you may come across.

If you want to help yourself even more, then it could also be good for you to try and make sure that you avoid using headphones and that you are also aware of the things that are going on around you. Make sure that you have a small amount of cash in case you ever lose your bank card, and also make sure that you have a phone with your bank details on it so you can protect yourself.

Trust your Instincts

It’s also a good idea for you to try to learn to trust your instincts. Most of the time, if you feel as though there is something wrong or if you feel as though a situation is unsafe, then most of the time you will be right with this.

If you want to help yourself, then set yourself up with an emergency SMS service so that if you are ever in trouble, you can always text rather than having to call emergency services. All you have to do is text a number, and when you do, you can then set your phone up so that you can get in touch with emergency services via text, which won’t take long, but is always worth doing.
