So you’re planning a trip to Baltimore, the land of Blue Crabs, waterfront strolls, quirky neighborhoods and more personality than a whole season of reality TV.

The city has plenty to offer, but with so much to see and do, planning the perfect trip can often feel like an Olympic sport. Whether you’re staying in one of the many extended stay hotels with pools and full service amenities in Baltimore, or you’re just passing through for a quick weekend, there are some fun tips that you need to help me to create a smooth and unforgettable Baltimore adventure, and we’ve got them for you below.

Start with the basics: When do you want to go?

Baltimore has seasons with real personalities. Spring is breezy and beautiful. Summer is vibrant. Fall is colorful and cosy, and winter, well, winter is winter. If you love festivals, open air markets and sunny waterfront vibes, spring and summer are perfect in Baltimore. If you prefer fewer crowds and cooler temperatures, fall is your new best friend. Choosing the right season sets the tone for your whole trip. Plus, some attractions and cruises only operate during certain months, so it does help to plan ahead.

Book your stay early.

Baltimore’s Inner Harbor is the crown jewel of the city. Restaurants, museums, water taxis, shops and scenic pathways are all within walking distance here. Naturally, it’s also the hottest place for visitors to stay, which means that hotels in the area fill up fast during peak seasons and weekends. If you want a great view, a good location or special amenities, book early. And if you plan to explore beyond downtown neighborhoods like Fells Point, Federal Hill and Mount Vernon, check lodging nearby so you’re never far from something fun.

Don’t miss the Inner Harbour.

You could easily spend an entire weekend in the Inner Harbor alone. The National Aquarium is one of the top in the country, and then you can see the harborplace and pavilions. You’ll also be able to see historic ships that you can tour and waterfront restaurants for delicious food. There are famous dragon shaped paddle boats here and even just walking the promenade is a treat. Think people watching, gorgeous views and plenty of places to shop for a snack.

Plan for crab feasts.

Baltimore takes crabs seriously. Like, really seriously. You’ll find steamed Blue Crabs drenched in Old Bay seasoning crab cakes the size of your fist, crab soup, crab dip, crab everything. If you want the full Maryland experience, try a traditional crab feast where they dump a pile of crabs on brown paper and hand you a mallet. Don’t wear white. Trust us on this. And prepare to get messy, because it’s all part of the fun. It’s a good idea to ask locals what their favorite spots are because they always know the good ones. Restaurant favourites often include places in Canton, Fells Point and along the waterfront.

Explore Baltimore’s quirky, charming neighborhoods.

Baltimore is not a one personality kind of city. It’s more like a small collection of mini worlds and each has its own vibe. Fells Point has cobblestone streets, pubs, shops and live music. It’s like stepping into a charming coastal village. Federal Hill offers great views of the harbor from the park at the top of the hill, plus restaurants lining the streets. Hampden is colorful, artsy and full of personality. Think funky boutiques, murals and a healthy dose of Baltimore weirdness. And then you have Mount Vernon, historic and elegant, home to museums, galleries, and all the beautiful architecture and culture you could want. These areas make you feel like you’ve taken multiple mini trips in one city.

Use public transit.

Driving in a new city can be stressful, especially with tight parking spots or busy weekend crowds. Baltimore has great alternatives with the light rail, Charm City Circulator and water taxis. You can also hire scooters and bikes everywhere along the harbour, and you’ll get to see the city from angles you would miss from behind a windshield.

Add a few museums to your itinerary.

Baltimore’s museums are surprisingly good, and they are varied. Whether you love art, history or science, there’s something for you. There is the American Visionary Art Museum, which is quirky, colorful and totally unique. You also have the Baltimore Museum of Art, which is free admission and is home to famous collections. The Maryland Science Center is a perfect blend of education and interactive fun. And then you have the Port Discovery Children’s Museum, which is great for families.

Sample the local food scene beyond the crabs.

Crabs are iconic, but Baltimore’s food scene goes way beyond seafood. Pit beef sandwiches, snowballs, soul food spots and global cuisine in Station North and Remington leave you loving the comfort food with character. Whatever you might be craving, you will find it.

Schedule time outdoors.

Baltimore has beautiful parks and spaces that make perfect breaks between city adventures. There are hidden nature gems and Paterson Park, Federal Hill Park, Druid Hill Park and Canton Waterfront Park, or all green spaces that give your brain a breather and your legs a stretch after museum hopping and crab eating.

Leave room for spontaneity.

Baltimore shines in the moments that you don’t plan. Some of the best Baltimore memories come from the surprises, like a street market you didn’t know was happening or a local band playing in a small bar. There might be a new restaurant that you stumble upon or a celebration popping up in the harbour. Baltimore has a way of giving you exactly the experience that you didn’t know you needed.

Planning a trip to Baltimore is exciting. It’s a city with history, humour, flavor, and heart. Now that you have these 10 tips, you’ll be able to have an unforgettable experience filled with crabs, waterfront adventures, and purely charming moments you won’t ever be able to let go off.
