5 Small steps to better health

Here are 5 small steps that will lead you on the path to better health right now.

There comes a point in everyone’s life when they realize that they need to start taking their health more seriously. It could be because they’ve reached a milestone birthday and realize they aren’t getting any younger, because they find it difficult to keep up with their kids at the park or because they wake up to the fact they have been neglecting themself for so long that their health is starting to fail as a result.

If any of those things sound familiar to you, or if you just want to start taking your health more seriously because you realize it hasn’t been your focus for so long, you will be glad to hear that better health can be built in small steps – you do not have to majorly overhaul your whole life in one go!

That being the case, let’s take a look at 5 small steps that will lead you on the path to better health right now.

1. Start With One Hydration Habit

A really easy way to improve your health is to simply start making sure that you are fully hydrated at all times. Water is vital for your health and wellbeing and having enough of it in your day will help your organs to function more effectively, support your digestion, stabilize your energy levels, improve your skin, and even boost your cognitive function so you will be able to think better at school or work.

But you know what? You don’t need to chug gallons a day. Try one small habit instead:

  • Keep a bottle at your desk and sip throughout your workday.
  • Swap a sugary drink for water once a day.

Little changes like these gradually re-train your brain and body without it feeling too overwhelming for you, which is exactly what small steps are all about, right?

2. Add Gentle Movement to Your Day

A lot of people, when they are starting to get serious about their health, joining the gym and start pushing themselves really hard really fast. This is rarely a rarely a good idea because although intense exercise is good for you, if you’re not used to it, it can lead to injury or burnout and that means you will end up giving up completely.

It is, then, a much smarter idea, if you want to start adding more movement into your life, to go for small, gentle moments of movement throughout the day. A five-minute stretch, a quick walk around the block, or a dance break in your kitchen absolutely counts towards your exercise, and will help you to feel more joyful about movement so that when you are ready to step things up a notch and do more intense workouts, you will be ready for them and you will have fun with them, as well as getting fit and getting into shape.

3. Improve Your Health by Upgrading Your Meals (Just a Little)

Healthy eating does not mean you have to throw everything out of your kitchen, and start completely from scratch, at least not when you are just getting started. You can just tweak your meals a little to increase their nutritional content, instead.

Some minor tweaks in the kitchen that will really start to help you improve your habits, include:

  • Add one extra serving of vegetables to your lunch or dinner.
  • Swap refined carbs for whole grains once or twice a week.
  • Include a protein source at every meal to stay fuller longer.
  • Keep fruit visible on your counter so you’ll reach for it.

You don’t need to meal prep every dish or follow strict rules, and actually, subtle adjustments are often far more sustainable. Over time, your taste preferences change and your meals naturally become more nourishing.

4. Make Sleep a Priority Starting With One Shift

Better health and better sleep really do go hand in hand, so if you are one of he millions of people in the country who are not getting a refreshing 7-9 hours of shut-eye each night, this is a really good area to focus on.

I know, though it can be hard to get more sleep when you have a hectic schedule or lots of health issues that are making it more difficult, so to make it easier, start with one simple step, such as:

  • Go to bed 15 minutes earlier.
  • Put your phone away 20 minutes before sleep.
  • Dim lights in the evening to help your body wind down.
Build a simple “power-down” routine: wash your face, stretch, turn down the noise.

Quality rest really is restorative, so if you can make getting more sleep a priority any of the other small changes you try to make on this list, will be much easier for you to do as a result.

5. Support Your Mental Health With Micro-Moments of Mindfulness

Stress reduction is one of the biggest contributors to overall wellness, yet it often gets overlooked. Mindfulness doesn’t require hours of meditation or expensive classes, so it is one of the best ways to help with your stresses and strains. To start with, try adding tiny moments throughout your day:

  • A 60-second pause to breathe deeply.
  • A mindful cup of tea where you savor each sip.
  • A quiet moment outside before getting in your car.
A short journaling prompt like “What do I need today?”

Even just spending a couple of minutes closing your eyes and focusing on your breath can work wonders for your stress levels, so you really can start as small as you need to when it comes to mindfulness practices.

If you start with any of these five small steps to better health, you really will start feeling better much sooner than you think, then you can add another and another until you are feeling pretty great overall. You really don’t need to change everything in your life to give yourself a healthier, longer life and trying to do so is often counterproductive!
