For its sixth edition, Pride Photo Award, the international photo competition on sexual and gender diversity, asks photographers to reflect on their own standpoint in relation to the people they photograph, while looking at inclusion and exclusion, both at a personal level and in society as a whole.
Photographers can submit their work until June 30.
In a statement, Pride Photo Award stated that “the 2016 theme is about communities. The groups of people a photographer (wants to) feels a part of, and the people he/she does or does not welcome in the communities he/she belongs to. It is about joining, belonging, participating and ostracizing. It is about families, society, parishes, clubs, intimate circles.”
At the same time, the theme also invites photographers to reflect on their own role as an outsider or insider, and whether they create a world that invites the viewer in, or confronts the viewer with a world they do not feel part of, like a voyeur.
From May 13 to June 30, photographers can register and find information on the Pride Photo Award website. Participants can submit photos about sexual and gender diversity in four categories: Single Images, Stories, an Open category and this year’s theme category ‘Insiders/Outsiders’.
Entries will be judged by a jury of photography experts, chaired by Ayperi Karabuda Ecer, who formerly was vice president of pictures at Reuters and editor in chief at Magnum Photos Paris. The other jury members are Hideko Kataoka, the current director of photography at Newsweek, Japan; Susan Bright, a curator and writer, who published books on various aspects of photography; John Fleetwood, director of PHOTO: a platform that curates and commissions photography projects and former director of the Market Photo Workshop in Johannesburg; and finally, photographer Sunil Gupta, who was also on the 2011 Pride Photo Award jury.
The winners will be announced on July 14. The award ceremony will take place on Friday, September 16th. The winner of the award will receive a ticket to Amsterdam and a stay at the Lloyd Hotel to attend the opening weekend.
The exhibition will be held from September 10th to October 16th in the Old Church of Amsterdam and is expected to draw more than 20,000 visitors.
Last year, 3,800 images were submitted by 400 photographers of 60 different nationalities. The 2015 winner was a picture from Italian photographer Marika Puicher’s series ‘Ella (she)’.
