In Cuba, the National Center for Sex Education (CENESEX) announced that it established a procedure that now allows individuals to request the rectification of the Civil Registry entry regarding their sex.
This document is based on people’s right to gender self-determination, and does not entail a clinical, psychological, or medical diagnosis regarding the person’s identity. The ruling serves as an administrative requirement within the procedure established by current legislation.
The process begins with obtaining the CENESEX ruling, which is to be presented with the birth certificate to the Civil Registry (every Tuesday, between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM at the CENESEX headquarters, located at Calle 10 No. 460 in the Vedado neighborhood, Plaza de la Revolución municipality, Havana).
For those unable to make personal appearance, electronic submission is also available via email at solicitudes.dictamen@cenesex.cu. The request must include the person’s legal name, chosen name (if applicable), national ID number, current address, contact telephone number, and a statement of the intent to correct the registered sex data. It must also specify if the person already changed their name or wishes to do so.
The ruling is delivered either at the institution’s headquarters during established hours or via email.
According to the CENESEX, this now “introduces a more streamlined procedure for name changes and the possibility of correcting registered sex for trans individuals”, even as it emphasized that it will “continue to support the protection of rights related to identity”.
