NorMin Pride stresses need to ‘take over Pride’ with photo campaign

NorMin Pride’s “We take Pride” photo campaign hopes to make Pride more localized by showcasing local LGBTQIA community members, including “many whose efforts help define the local LGBTQIA movement.”

The need to “localize Pride” needs to be stressed.

So said Stephen Christian Quilacio, Mindanao correspondent of Outrage Magazine and convener of Northern Mindanao Pride (NorMin Pride), a network of LGBTQIA organizations from these parts of the Philippines, formed to organize Pride-related celebrations here.

“Pride is supposed to be for everyone,” Quilacio said, “even if – often – how Pride is marked is patterned from non-local ideas and ideals. And so while it is worth taking pride in our Pride (as LGBTQIA people), we should also ‘take over’ Pride (in a manner of speaking) and turn it into one that’s relevant to us, wherever we may be.”

NorMin Pride’s “We take Pride” photo campaign hopes to add to the local efforts to do this, exactly, by showcasing local LGBTQIA community members, including “many whose efforts help define the local LGBTQIA movement.”

Pride for Northern Mindanao will take place on June 25, from 3:00PM, at the Plaza Divisoria Amphitheater.
