Not putting up with LGBTQIA discrimination.
The European Commission launched legal action against Hungary over an anti-LGBTQIA law.
The lawsuit is the latest in the list of standoffs between the European Union (EU) member country Hungary’s hardline nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban versus the liberal core of the EU over human rights and democratic standards.
Last year, Hungary banned the use of materials seen as promoting homosexuality and gender change in schools. This was supposedly to “protect” children by defending “traditional Catholic family values.” This move was labelled as a “disgrace” by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Hungary is among the most conservative countries in the EU; marriage equality is not recognized, and only heterosexual couples can adopt children.
Already, the EU executive withheld billions in aid to Hungary over disputes related to LGBTQIA human rights, aside from issues related to the independence of its media and courts.
