UP Cinema, the organization behind the prestigious film festival Piling Obrang Vidyo, invites audiences to celebrate the power of storytelling and the essence of local culture this upcoming July 1-6 at the University of the Philippines’ Film Institute Film Center for the film screenings and the awards ceremony at Cine Adarna.
As Piling Obrang Vidyo marks its 20th year, the festival embraces the theme “Tayo Ang Pelikula,” highlighting the vibrant tapestry of Filipino culture through films crafted by local talents. This milestone event promises a rich array of narratives that reflect the unique experiences, values, and dreams of the Filipino people, resonating deeply with viewers from all walks of life.
FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS
Award-winning films and emerging talents: The festival will feature a diverse lineup of films, including award-winning entries and works from emerging filmmakers. These films delve into various aspects of Filipino life, from rural traditions to urban realities, showcasing the depth and diversity of the nation’s storytelling.
Distinguished panel of judges: This year’s festival is honored to have a distinguished panel of judges, including notable figures who have made significant contributions to the Filipino film industry. Among them are award-winning directors, celebrated documentarians, esteemed actors, and a National Artist known for their groundbreaking work in cinema. These esteemed judges bring a wealth of experience and expertise, ensuring that the best and most deserving films are recognized.
The official judges include: National Artist Kidlat Tahimik, filmmakers Baby Ruth Villarama, Carl Joseph Papa, Jesed Moreno and Maria Estela Paiso, and scientist-actor Jason Tan Liwag.
Screenings and panels: Attendees can look forward to special screenings of official selection of films, followed by panel discussions with directors, writers, and industry experts. These sessions will offer insights into the creative process and the cultural significance of the featured works.
Awards ceremony at Cine Adarna: The culmination of the festival will be the highly anticipated awards ceremony at Cine Adarna, where outstanding films and filmmakers will be honored for their contributions to Philippine cinema. This event will recognize excellence in various categories, including Best Film, Best Director, and Audience Choice Award.
