In Cebu City, we were, in a way, discovering by getting lost. After checking out the Basílica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebú (a.k.a. Santo Niño Basilica), we decided to just walk to the other tourist attractions (e.g. Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House). And that’s how we ended up checking the Heritage of Cebu Monument.

Una, also known as the Parian Monument, it was made by Filipino sculptor Eduardo Castrillo, and architects Heradio Español and Ildefonso Santos, and is the centerpiece of the Parian Park. This used to be the site of the Saint John the Baptist Church, which was demolished in 1875 by the Diocese of Cebu.
Ikalawa, this is actually among the most visited tourist attractions in Cebu.
Ikatlo, that popularity is not surprising since you won’t just see one rebulto here, but an artwork including depictions of Cebu’s involvement in Philippine history – e.g. the Battle of Mactan, inauguration of Sergio Osmeña as President of the Philippines, and canonization of Pedro Calungsod as saint by the Roman Catholic Church.
Note the over-emphasis on religion, perhaps to emphasize that this is the birthplace of Roman Catholicism in the country. This won’t be for all, particularly to those who oppose colonialization through religious imposition.
All the same, intricate comes to mind, since the artwork consists of sculptures made from a mixture of concrete, bronze, brass and steel.
Ika-apat, you won’t need a lot of time naman here. And this highlights what’s kulang, what’s lacking here – i.e. immediate related activities, venues, et cetera. Sana man lang may café for pampalamig, no? Or a merch shop/pasalubong center. Or… you get the drift. Alas, here, this is a standalone attraction that can only be checked after braving Cebu’s sweltering heat or, as the case may be, pouring rain.
