To educate would-be legal professionals on Intersex 101, Intersex Philippines Inc.’s (IXPI) executive director Jeff B. Cagandahan conducted a lecture for law students of the College of Law at the Western Mindanao State University.
The lecture introduced the students to intersex and the legal realities faced by intersex Filipinos, though Cagandahan also shared the significance of the landmark Cagandahan ruling (Republic v. Cagandahan, G.R. No. 166676) that remains an important jurisprudence on the legal recognition of intersex persons in the Philippines.
Similarly discussed was the Cagandahan Bill, a proposed measure inspired by the aforementioned jurisprudence. The bill seeks to make the process of changing or correcting the name and sex marker of intersex Filipinos more accessible, particularly by providing a clearer process that would not require them to go through a lengthy court proceeding.
“For us, creating spaces where future lawyers can learn directly from an intersex advocate and understand the legal realities of intersex Filipinos is an important step toward building a more informed and inclusive justice system,” Cagandahan stated.
