E.A.: ‘If you expect respect from others, show it first to yourself’

In the spirit of Pride in the Philippines this December, LGBT people were interviewed in the hopes of showing a broader spectrum of the community. Meet 25-year-old E.A., who believes that “it’s a waste of good time not showing your real self. That time spent trying to fit in is already a perfect opportunity of building a strong foundation of trust and respect. Life is too short to feel the regret of each day passing by not knowing the colorful life that’s meant for you or rather what you truly want for yourself.”

We as LGBT must always remember that society treats us the way we treat ourselves. As the saying goes, ‘If you expect respect from others, show it first to yourself’.

It’s a waste of good time not showing your real self. That time spent trying to fit in is already a perfect opportunity of building a strong foundation of trust and respect. Life is too short to feel the regret of each day passing by not knowing the colorful life that’s meant for you or rather what you truly want for yourself.

We have a flourishing LGBT community here in the country with a distinctive subculture. But at this day and age, we still have limited rights presented to us. Our nation’s old, conservative ways along with our country’s deep faith in religion – may it be catholic or islam – slows down the progress of passing bills that can better improve the equally important LGBT rights.

Live with peace, be content, have compassion, and always see life with equality.
