In Texas, a new law was passed to deny transgender minors from accessing gender-affirming medical care. To take effect in September after extremist right-wing Republican governor Greg Abbott signed the law, prohibited acts include:

  • providing of physicians of surgery “for the purpose of transitioning a child’s biological sex” or surgery that “sterilizes the child”; and
  • prescribing puberty blockers and hormone therapies to minors (although it makes exceptions for children who are already receiving care only so that they “wean off” any gender-affirming drugs they are taking).

With this anti-LGBTQIA law, Texas now joins at least 18 other American states that have enacted similar bans to limit access to medical care of transgender people. This is even if medical organizations, including the American Medical Association, oppose such bans and instead support the medical care for transgender youth when administered appropriately.
