The very first property registration specifically recognizing the gender identity of a transgender person was done in Chavakkad, a municipality in the Thrissur district of State of Kerala, India.
In the past, registering land in online systems meant using only the genders “male” or “female”. So 38-year-old Faisal Faisu, whose documents – including his Aadhaar card – already states that their gender is “TG”, contested the process of property registration. This led to the introduction of “TG” among the genders of property owners initially at the Chavakkad sub-registrar office.
Prior to this, a transgender person was also provided with housing under the government’s LIFE mission scheme, but the registration misgendered them by using “male”.
