LGBTQIA discrimination has a place in Utah… apparently.
The US state of Utah, dubbed the “Beehive State”, became the first to prohibit flying the LGBTQIA+ pride flag in all government buildings and schools after its Republican governor Spencer Cox allowed a ban on “unsanctioned flag displays” to become law sans his signature.
Cox – seemingly not wanting to appear anti-LGBTQIA+ – supposedly said he has serious concerns with the policy, and yet he still chose not to reject. Supposedly it’s because veto would still be likely overridden by the state’s extremist right-wing Republican-controlled Legislature.
With this ban, all state and local government buildings will be fined $500 a day for flying any flag other than the US flag, Utah state flag, military flags, or those approved by lawmakers.
The law goes into effect on May 7.
