Guatemala’s Congress voted in favor of a law prohibiting same-sex marriage, while also prohibiting the teaching of sexual diversity in schools.

The Congress-approved law actually reforms Guatemala’s Civil Code to “expressly prohibit same-sex marriages”; while also stipulates that schools should be banned from teaching pupils that “anything other than heterosexuality is normal”.

The “Life and Family Protection Law” passed by an overwhelming majority in the conservative-led Congress, with 160 politician voting for it, and only eight lawmakers against it. To come into force, the law still needs to be signed by Guatemala’s conservative president, Alejandro Giammattei.
