Spain’s parliament approved a new legislation that will allow anyone over the age of 16 to change their legally registered gender, while also banning conversion therapy as it puts an end to public subsidies for groups that “incite or promote LGBTIphobia”.

With the new law, anyone aged over 16 will be able to change their gender on official documents without medical supervision. For minors between the ages of 12 to 14, a judge needs to authorize the change, while those aged between 14 and 16 needs the consent of their parents or guardians. Those under the age of 12 will not have this option altogether.

The new law was contentious, but it was passed by 191 votes in favor, 60 against and with 91 abstentions.
