In Georgia, a legislation that will ban LGBTQIA+ marches and “colorful items” has been submitted to the country’s parliament, which is dominated by Georgian Dream, the governing party.
Speaking to news website Georgia Today, parliamentarian Shalva Papuashvili was quoted as saying that the bill was already forwarded to the Human Rights Committee for consideration, and while it may not reflect the changing ideas and ideologies, it is supposedly based on “centuries-old Christian, Georgian and European values.”
The full content of the bill has yet to be released, though initial statements related to it indicate the intent to prohibit LGBTQIA+ events and symbols.
This is not the first anti-LGBTQIA+ effort by the government of Georgia. Earlier – in 2024 – a new law (Law on Family Values and Protection of Minors) also passed through the parliament to ban LGBTQIA+ “propaganda”, marriage equality, gender affirmation surgeries, and public marches or events promoting LGBTQIA+ rights.
