In Idaho, a sweeping bathroom ban was signed into law to criminalize transgender people from using bathrooms that align with their gender identity and not their assigned sex at birth, including in private businesses.

Gov. Brad Little signed House Bill 752 that creates criminal penalties for any person who “knowingly and willfully” enters a bathroom, locker room, or changing room designated for the opposite sex in public accommodations and government-owned buildings.

This new law expands the scope of enforcement to private business.

Violators could face a year in jail for a misdemeanor first offense, or up to five years in prison for a felony second offense.

The anti-LGBTQIA+ bathroom bill is to go into effect on July 1.
