Maryland lawmakers seek to allow ‘X’ for sex on birth certificates

A bill – the Birth Certificate Modernization Act – was proposed to give official recognition to members of the LGBTQIA community, particularly transgender and non-binary people, by streamlining procedures for amending sex on official documents (e.g. birth certificates, licenses and IDs), and introducing a gender-neutral designation option.

With convicted felon American president Donald Trump making the removal of LGBTQIA human rights protections his administration’s official policy, Maryland lawmakers are now considering a measure that would create a new designation of “X” for sex on birth certificates.

It, similarly, affords protection by ensuring that the documents do not display amendment histories.

Currently, Maryland allows the Secretary of Health to issue new birth certificates for individuals who underwent sex transition, or are intersex. Parents/guardians/legal representatives may submit requests on behalf of minors or disabled individuals.

Earlier, when right-wing TV personality Trump took office, he immediately signed an executive order to make it the “official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female.” The ignorant move, while targeting transgender people in particular, also denied the existence of intersex people.
