How to keep a maximalist home clean and tidy

So what can you do to try and break free of the mess? If you’re a maximalism lover who hates wiping things down every 5 seconds, these are the tips that might just help.

Maximalism in home decor is all about filling your home with as many colors, trinkets, and items as you want. It’s a style that attracts those with a love of comfort and variety, as well as those with big and bold personalities. It’s a great way to decorate your home when you love being surrounded by the things you love and the memories they hold.

But there is one annoying thing about maximalist home decor: how hard it is to keep clean! When there’s stuff everywhere, the dust and grime can build up in seconds. Trying to keep up with this feels like a losing game, and you’re never going to get rid of those specks of dust on the shelves, or that cat fluff all over the back of the couch.

So what can you do to try and break free of the mess? If you’re a maximalism lover who hates wiping things down every 5 seconds, these are the tips that might just help.

Put Things in Display Cases

When something is behind a display case, it’s in a more air and temperature controlled space than if it was open to the room. If you want to keep your most valuable and much-loved items as clean and tidy as possible, get them behind some glass and lock it up.

Display cases also stop critters from getting into vases and jars, and prevent them taking chunks out of your books as well. Remember, maximalist homes can be heaven for creatures like spiders and termites, and you’ll want to call pest control if you see any signs you’re dealing with a nest.

Use Compressed Air Sprays to Tackle Dust

Dust is hard to get to when you’re living in maximalist decor. You’ve got a lot of climbing around and ducking under to do, and that’s hell on both the knees and the back.

Plus, trying to get your microfiber cloth into all the nooks and crannies is just inefficient in the first place.

So instead, tackle dust with some compressed air sprays. You can use these to blow dust off of literally anything, but be sure to hold up a cloth or duster brush behind the item to catch it all.

Don’t Leave Cleaning Until Later

This is the best way to keep any home clean, but it has double the impact on a maximalist home. Tasks can’t pile up and turn the space into something that feels unnaturally, horribly cluttered – rather than a well loved and lived in kind of home.

So whenever you make a mess, clean it up in the same breath. Cooking? Wash the dishes as you go. Eating? Vacuum up the crumbs the moment you’re finished. Get the cleaning done and out of the way and save yourself another 20 minutes at the end of the day.
