Texas issues policy preventing trans people from updating their driver’s licenses

Based on an internal policy issued by Texas’ Department of Public Safety – and effective August 20 – the department will no longer accept court orders or amended birth certificates issued that change the sex when it differs from documentation already on file.

In Texas, transgender people will no longer be able to update the sex markers listed on their state driver’s licenses.

For current DL/ID holders, only a clerical error will be accepted as reason for making changes.

All Texans who already changed their gender markers will still be able to renew their driver’s licenses and IDs.

Before this, the Department of Public Safety had a “gender change” policy, which allowed Texans to update their sex marker with a court order or updated birth certificate. This policy was also already erased on the state’s website.
