Pride has been coopted by businesses every June, but a study found that the guise of rainbow logos doesn’t always translate into good workplace experiences for LGBTQ employees. The Glassdoor survey conducted by The Harris Poll particularly pointed to foundational hurdles that prevent LGBTQIA employees from experiencing truly inclusive workspaces.

The survey was conducted among 6,179 employed adults in the US, aged 18 and older.

Here are some of the findings:

  • 45% of employed LGBTQIA people said they believe being “out” at work could hurt their careers (e.g. losing a job, not getting a promotion, not being selected for a project).
  • 55% of LGBTQIA employees reported experienced or witnessed anti-LGBTQIA comments by co-workers.

According to Tyler Murphy, a Glassdoor career trends expert: “This survey data shines a light on the LGBTQIA employee experience and is a reminder that many companies still have progress to make. When looking for an LGBTQ-friendly company to work for, keep an eye out for things like LGBTQ+ employee resource groups or LGBTQIA benefits and inclusive language in their job listings.”
