A new law in Japan’s Mie region makes it illegal to out LGBTQIA people, becoming the country’s first prefecture to do so.

Under the new law, it is illegal to reveal an LGBTQIA person’s sexual orientation or gender identity without their permission. It is also against the law to force them into revealing it themselves.

As reported by Japan Today, governor Eikei Suzuki was quoted as saying that outing “can destabilize family and working relationships and drive people into isolation by disrupting their friendships and contact with other people”.

The ban is part of a wider anti-discrimination law in the region.
