The City Government of Zamboanga, through the Gender and Development Services of the Office of the City Mayor, is scheduled to host Pride in Zamboanga City. Mujer-LGBT Organization, Inc. is working with the local government unit to hold Zamboanga Pride.

Every June, Pride is observed to honor the LGBTQIA+ community – i.e. their struggles, the successes achieved in the push for their human rights, and what else needs to be done to promote true equality and inclusion. This year, said to be guided by this year’s theme, “Orgullo na cada Voz, Igualdad na cada Espasyo”, the city hopes to “reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that every voice is heard and every space is safe, inclusive, and welcoming for all.”

According to Toni Gee Fernandez, president and executive director of Mujer-LGBT Organization, Inc., this year’s theme – “Orgullo na cada Voz, Igualdad na cada Espasyo” – is not just a Pride theme but “is a challenge to a society that still decides whose voices deserve to be heard and whose existence should remain invisible.”

“Pride has never been about making people comfortable. It has always been about confronting injustice. If every voice truly matters, then society must be ready to listen to voices it has ignored for generations. If every space is truly equal, then those who benefit from exclusion must be willing to give up the privileges that inequality has afforded them.”

For Fernandez, therefore, “until then, Pride remains both a celebration and a protest.”
